Series 6 Exam — Quick Cheat Sheet

The Series 6 license qualifies you as an Investment Company and Variable Contracts Products Representative — authorized to sell mutual funds, variable annuities, variable life insurance, and unit investment trusts (but not individual stocks, bonds, or options). Administered by FINRA.

Exam-Day Numbers (memorize these)

  • 50 scored questions
  • 90 minutes (1 hour 30 minutes)
  • Passing score: 70%
  • Fee: $100

Do the Math

  • At 50 questions and a 70% passing bar, you must answer 35 questions correctly (0.70 × 50) — you can miss up to 15.
  • 90 minutes ÷ 50 questions ≈ 1.8 minutes per question. Keep this pace; flag hard items and return to them.

Co-Requisite Rule

  • The Series 6 is a limited representative license. You must also pass the SIE (Securities Industry Essentials) exam to qualify. The SIE is a separate exam with its own fee and question count — the Series 6 numbers above cover the Series 6 exam only.

Test-Taking Rules of Thumb

  • Since a wrong answer and a blank both score zero, never leave a question unanswered — eliminate and guess.
  • Budget review time: finishing all 50 items in 90 minutes leaves roughly zero slack at ~1.8 min each, so answer decisively on the first pass.
